This came out in 2003 – or at least that’s when I got it. Here’s what I said about it back then (with some minor editing):
Call it a full meal deal — Tomato Records serves up a two-disc sample platter loaded with classic tracks and top-shelf collectibles from its catalog.
ON THE MENU: Nearly four dozen prime slices of blues, soul, rock, jazz, rockabilly, folk and country, from Bessie Smith’s Alexander’s Ragtime Band to Charlie Parker’s Mood to Howlin’ Wolf’s Little Red Rooster to Chuck Berry’s In The Wee Wee Hours to Carl Perkins’ Honey Don’t to Little Richard’s Lucille to … oh hell, you get the idea.
SURPRISE: Louisiana Red’s murderously misogynistic Sweet Blood Call, whose opening line — “I have a hard time missing you baby / When my pistol’s in your mouth” — is chilling enough to make the hair on the back of your neck stand up.
