Classic Album Review: The Cranberries | Stars: The Best of 1982 – 2002

I can't appreciate this best-of from Dolores O’Riordan & co. — but plenty of fans can.

This came out in 2002 – or at least that’s when I got it. Here’s what I said about it back then (with some minor editing):

For the life of me, I have never been able to understand why The Cranberries are popular. And after listening to their new greatest-hits collection Stars: The Best of 1982 – 2002, I still can’t.

To me, they will always sound like a watered-down Sinead O’Connor fronting a generic alt-rock band. But for the millions who hear something I clearly am not in the sounds of Dolores O’Riordan and co., Stars might very well be a treat. The disc has 18 hits and favourite tracks — from their gently lush hit ballad Linger to harder-hitting fare like Zombie and This Is The Day — along with a pair of new tracks (including the post 9/11 rocker New New York) and a live five-track EP taped earlier this year. Enjoy — even if I can’t.
