CJ Wiley | Running Backwards: Exclusive Premiere

The Toronto roots-pop artist offers a preview of their upcoming All Our Love EP.

CJ Wiley puts their best foot forward with the new number Running Backwards — premiering exclusively on Tinnitist.

The Toronto singer-songwriter’s sophomore single, Running Backwards is a little bit country, a little bit garage rock, and hits with lyrics that are as sentimental as they are playfully tongue-in-cheek — delivered in Wiley’s wistfully endearing manner. It’s a preview of their debut three-song EP All Our Love, which is set for release on June 16. Recorded at Banquet Sound in Toronto, the disc features guest appearances from heavy-hitting musicians like Dani Nash and producer Nixon Boyd.

“This EP has a few themes;” Wiley says. “It tells a story of teen nostalgia, finding humour in hardship and reflecting on push-and-pull relationships.”

Featuring the tunes Don’t Die Charlie, Running Backwards and All Our Love, Wiley’s EP offers up a different set of emotions to every listener. Their band’s first show was to a sold-out Horseshoe Tavern in the fall of 2021, and their new music is slated for release through spring and summer. Genre-bending and gender-defying, CJ’s voice has drawn comparisons to the candid wit of contemporaries Sharon Van Etten and Courtney Barnett, with the wholesome twang of Shania Twain.
