THE PRESS RELEASE: “The seeds for Songs of Future Past were planted after a show a couple of years ago, when the New Orleans band Sabertooth Swing found themselves playing a dance in a local juke joint.
It was a late, sweaty night. The band had paired up with a noted local blues act, and for the occasion had prepared a setlist of slower tunes. This particular set was a little more blue than usual, with a distinct air of melancholy and wanderlust. A couple of songs in, the band knew this was going to be an especially memorable night. After the fact, an album of this material felt inevitable. Additionally, the band saw it as an opportunity to explore the possibility of applying a more classic touch to some of their favorite modern repertoire.
Eventually, the COVID pandemic gave the album its finishing touch. The title evokes time-travel gone wrong — it takes place in a universe that is neither the past, the future, nor the present. Everything feels different, and yet still familiar; eerie, but still very appealing…”
