Classic Album Review: Reckless Kelly | Wicked Twisted Road

This came out in 2005 — or at least that’s when I got it. Here’s what I said about it back then (with some minor editing):

Reckless Kelly know from Twisted Roads.

While they’ve been on the Austin scene for years — and sound like it — this roots-rock quintet (led by singer-guitarist Willy Braun and his multi-instrumentalist brother Cody) originally hail from Oregon. Judging by their lyrics, they’ve seen their share of romantic twists and turns too. On this raucous fifth album, they distill all that roadwork into a solid set of fiery barnburners and jangly ballads delivered with a classic Steve Earle spin. Fronted by Willy’s gravelly growl and heavy-handed strum, searing rockers like Sixgun, darkhearted ballads like Nobody Haunts Me Like You and Celtic-tinged glass-raisers like Seven Nights In Eire could be outtakes from Earle’s early days — perhaps no surprise, considering they were produced by Steve’s frequent partner-in-crime Ray Kennedy. Guess one good twist deserves another.
