Classic Album Review: The Forty-Fives | High Life High Volume

The Atlanta retro-rockers turn in their gnarliest work with the help of Jim Diamond.

This came out in 2004 – or at least that’s when I got it. Here’s what I said about it back then (with some minor editing):

These Atlanta retro-rockers have always been a decent garage band. So it only makes sense that on this third full-length, they head for the centre of the action — the Motor City.

With the help of Detroit producer and Dirtbombs member Jim Diamond, the boys turn in their gnarliest effort yet, dropping 11 firecrackers brimming with sizzling guitars, burbling organs, thumping drums and grooves equally fit for shaking a tailfeather or a fist. It won’t take them to the big time, but there’s no doubt High Life High Volume is the high point of The Forty-Fives’ career so far.
