Classic Album Review: Massive Attack | Danny The Dog

The cinematic trip-hoppers finally get into the soundtrack game.

This came out in 2004 – or at least that’s when I got it. Here’s what I said about it back then (with some minor editing):

It’s hard to believe it has taken Massive Attack more than a decade to get into the soundtrack game.

After all, the ominous claustrophobia and druggy ambiance of their darkly dramatic trip-hop — a sound often (and not coincidentally) referred to as cinematic — would seem tailor-made for Hollywood. At any rate, it sure seems like it would add some teeth to Danny The Dog (aka Unleashed), a vicious-sounding martial arts pic starring Jet Li as a slave raised to be a fight club combatant. I’ll bite.
