Classic Album Review: Eleni Mandell | Afternoon

The versatile singer-songwriter truly finds her own voice on her relaxed fifth album.

This came out in 2004 – or at least that’s when I got it. Here’s what I said about it back then (with some minor editing):

From her early days as a noirish chanteuse to her more recent incarnation as an alt-country torcher, Eleni Mandell has always possessed a gorgeous voice. But with her confidently relaxed fifth album Afternoon, Mandell finally and truly finds her own voice, applying her huskily seductive tones to tunes that reflect her influences while asserting their own dark, distinctive and delicious personalities. Make a day of it.
