Rob McNelley Stays Behind As The Circus Is Leaving Town

The Nashville guitarist paints a portrait of a master manipulator in his latest single

Rob McNelley watches helplessly as a tent-show ringmaster packs up and moves on in his new single Circus Is Leaving Town — showcasing today on Tinnitist.

McNelley — an esteemed Nashville guitarist celebrated for his work with icons like Bob Seger, Dolly Parton and Luke Combs — showcases his masterful blend of Americana and classic rock once again on his latest track. Written by McNelley and Nashville songwriter Bob Rea, Circus Is Leaving Town was produced by McNelley with Grammy-winning producer Justin Francis.

Circus Is Leaving Town is a driving acoustic guitar-based folk track featuring a nostalgic Hammond organ, evoking a classic ’70s sound. Lyrically, the song delves into the theme of manipulation and deceit, painting a vivid picture of the aftermath left by a conniving ringmaster. “Circus Is Leaving Town is a song about someone you know — the master manipulator. It might be your boss, family member, your ex, a politician, etc. They only reveal themselves once they’ve moved on. This is about that person.” The chorus poignantly captures this sentiment:

“I’m not sure what to do with this moment
Sleight of hand’s got me reeling right now
Trying to keep my world from crashing down
Every time I turn around
The jugglers and clowns have torn it all down
The circus is leaving town.”

McNelley’s career is steeped in a deep respect for finely crafted songs, which has made him one of the most sought-after guitarists in country music. Known for his great tone, feel, and melodic sense, he has contributed to numerous chart-topping hits, earning multiple ACM’s Guitar Player of The Year awards and CMA’s Musician of The Year nominations. His work spans an array of iconic rock and blues artists, including Lainey Wilson, Carrie Underwood, Hank Williams Jr., Lady Antebellum, Joe Bonamassa, Buddy Guy and Delbert McClinton.

As a solo artist, McNelley channels his experience into crafting dyed-in-the-denim roots rock, blending country’s economic lyrics, blues’ urgency, and the anthemic hooks of ’70s and ’80s album-oriented radio. His previous single Right Back To You showcased his ability to blend Americana and pop-rock, highlighting his soulfully emotive vocals and expert guitar work. Produced alongside Francis and multi-instrumentalist Russ Pahl, the song resonated with audiences, bringing a fresh yet familiar sound that balances modern radio sheen with classic-rock scruff.

Looking ahead, McNelley plans to release new singles throughout 2024, with an EP slated for later in the year. He remains committed to his dual role as a world-class sideman and solo artist, performing regionally and sharing his unique musical voice with a broader audience. Reflecting on his journey, McNelley states: “I’ve been fortunate to play with artists who have the Mount Rushmore of songs. When I play one of their songs, I always say to myself, ‘how do I write a song that good?!’ It inspires me!”
