Classic Album Review: Various Artists | Where Is My Mind: A Tribute To The Pixies

A slate of indie-rockers pay tribute to one of the ’80s & ’90s most influential bands.

This came out in 1999 – or at least that’s when I got it. Here’s what I said about it back then (with some minor editing):

If you think about it, most of the ’90s rock scene already qualifies as one long Pixies tribute — everybody and their dog has spent years rewriting Smells Like Teen Spirit, a song even St. Kurt Cobain claimed was really just a Pixies knockoff.

The 15-track CD Where Is My Mind finally makes it official, cutting out the middleman and going straight to the source of the now-ubiquitous slow-soft / loud-fast template. And while some of the college-rock lineup here is B-grade, the results pass with flying colours, from Eve 6’s acoustic Alison to the poppy crunch of Weezer (doing Velouria) or Superdrag (Wave Of Mutilation) and Reel Big Fish’s jumpy Gigantic. Too bad the guy who started the whole affair isn’t still around to do a track.
