Classic Album Review: Girl Nobody | The Future Isn’t What it Used to Be

The Vancouver pop-rockers have more than enough talent to be somebodies.

This came out in 2004 – or at least that’s when I got it. Here’s what I said about it back then (with some minor editing):

Near as I can tell, anyone who writes about Girl Nobody is expected to drool over the sexiness of singer-keyboardist Marta Jaciubek. Lucky for her — and the rest of this up-and-coming Vancouver quintet — most scribes also salivate over their sound. And with good reason.

On their CD The Future Isn’t What it Used To Be, Marta and co. swirl a seductive cocktail of rock, pop and electronica. Deftly merging the cutting-edge (woozy trip-hop beatboxes and shimmering electronica vibes) with the kitschy (old-school analog synths and Theremin) and the classic (crunching guitars and pop songcraft), Girl Nobody fashion an ethereal yet potently hooky backdrop for Jaciubek’s tender, girlish vocals. No, they haven’t reinvented the wheel — but their design is cool enough to suggest Girl Nobody could be somebodies in the near future. Decide for yourself.
