Classic Album Review: Cheap Trick | The Essential

The veteran power-popsters double your pleasure with this two-disc anthology.

1.83.0-GYYENQVFVSFPWGKXCBJJBSKL5Q.0.2-8

This came out in 2004 – or at least that’s when I got it. Here’s what I said about it back then (with some minor editing):

THE SKINNY: The umpteenth hits set from classic power-pop combo Cheap Trick is a two-CD affair — one disc of ’70s classics and a second of their lesser ’80s and ’90s fare.

THE OLDIES: Early rockers like ELO Kiddies and Hot Love, mid-period hits like Surrender, I Want You To Want Me and Dream Police, and even later glop like The Flame.

THE GOODIES: An unreleased 1990 ballad featuring The PretendersChrissie Hynde; a couple of live cuts from their self-released Music For Hangovers.
