Late-Night TV Music (Battle Lines Edition) | June 18, 2019

Willie & Carlos battle Little Mix & Jessie Buckley for late-night supremacy.

Men from America vs. women from the British Isles. Those were the battle lines when it came to musical entertainment on Tuesday’s late-night TV shows. In this corner, you had Willie Nelson rasping his way through the Blue Bayou-coloured My Favorite Picture Of You — the leadoff track from his zillionth album Ride Me Back Home — on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon. Or you had Latino guitar hero Santana, leading his big band and guest vocalist Buika through Breaking Down the Door — one of the groovy jams from his recent Rick Rubin-produced disc Africa Speaks — on Jimmy Kimmel Live. I wouldn’t call his flashy solo on this number one of his finest moments, but thankfully the show also posted nearly 20 minutes of extra footage, including several numbers where he redeems himself. Then, on the other side of the coin (and the pond), there was girl group Little Mix, strutting their stuff for The Late Late Show With James Corden with a crew of dancers on the single Bounce Back. And for something totally random, check out Irish singer and actress Jessie Buckley — most recently seen as the pregnant firefighter’s wife in the mini-series Chernobyl — singing the Celtic ballad Glasgow, a song from her upcoming film Wild Rose, on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert. Let the battle begin.
