Classic Album Review: Sam Phillips | Zero Zero Zero

The veteran singer-songwriter gathers underappreciated highlights from her career.

This came out in 1999 – or at least that’s when I got it. Here’s what I said about it back then (with some minor editing):

You can’t really call this a greatest-hits set, since singer-songwriter Sam Phillips has never actually had a hit.

That is truly unfathomable — especially after just one spin of this retrospective, which compiles highlights from her four studio albums, along with two new songs. With her urgent, expressive voice and sharp, intelligent songcraft — I’m far from the first to liken her to a distaff Elvis Costello — Phillips isn’t your typical pop princess. Which probably has a lot to do with why this isn’t a greatest-hits CD.
