Classic Album Review: Chuck E. Weiss | Extremely Cool

The L.A. singer-songwriter gets some help from drinking buddy Tom Waits.

This came out in 1999 – or at least that’s when I got it. Here’s what I said about it back then (with some minor editing):

Now that new Tom Waits CDs come along less often than solar eclipses, fans have to get by on his moonlight gigs — like his cameo on Fishing With John show or this disc from long-time drinking buddy Weiss (yes, that Chuck E., the one who’s in love).

And it’s certainly easy for Waits aficionadoes to love this CD — Tom sings backup, plays guitar and even produced the sucker. But make no mistake: Weiss is the star of the show. Not surprisingly, they share the same twisted spirit and guttersnipe approach, down to the gravel-throated delivery, mutated dada blues and beatnik-patois poetry about boozy barflies and greasy spoons. It’s no Heartattack & Vine, but it’ll do until we have to stop waiting for Waits.
