Classic Album Review: Sky | Piece Of Paradise

The Montreal duo's urban soul is more sophisticated than typical teen-beat syrup.

This came out in 1999 – or at least that’s when I got it. Here’s what I said about it back then (with some minor editing):

Some people wanna fill the world with silly love songs — and make teenage girls scream.

The latest folks to take up the challenge are Montreal soul-pop duo Sky, who come ready-made for 16 Magazine covers and teenyboppers’ bedroom walls. Antoine is the tattooed, neat-freak party animal. James is the sky-diving, introspective, sci-fi fan (or so their bio helpfully points out). Oh yeah, and they make music, too — ultra-slick urban hang-suite soul slightly more sophisticated than the typical teen-beat syrup. It still won’t appeal to anybody old enough to drink legally — but as they say, the men don’t know, but the little girls understand, don’t they?
