Classic Album Review: 20 Miles | I’m A Lucky Guy

The Blues Explosion guitarist & his brother make their own luck on their second LP.

This came out in 1999 – or at least that’s when I got it. Here’s what I said about it back then (with some minor editing):

With Judah Bauer’s pedigree — he plays guitar in the Jon Spencer Blues Explosion and has backed up R.L. Burnside — you’d expect his second solo disc to be another twisted slice of straight-razor and moonshine blues.

Thankfully, Bauer defies your expectations. And manages to exceed them on I’m A Lucky Guy, his latest album with 20 Miles (which co-stars his brother Donovan on drums). He’s swiped Exile On Main Street’s country honk, lifted John Fogerty’s chiming, chicken-picking guitar style and even borrowed a bit of the JSBX’s swampy funk. What he ends up with is more rock-blues than blues-rock — and more accessible than anything he’s done so far. And you can be sure luck had nothing to do with it.
