Classic Album Review: Various Artists | Buddyhead Presents: Gimme Skelter

The L.A. underground label give you what for with this potent & provocative comp.

This came out in 2004 – or at least that’s when I got it. Here’s what I said about it back then (with some minor editing):

You may not know Buddyhead, the L.A.-based underground website and record label run by one of the guys from punk outfit The Icarus Line. But trust me: They know you. They know what you want. They know what you need.

And all of it can be found on Gimme Skelter, their potent and provocative new compilation album. This 75-minute set collects nearly 20 excellent tracks from a whole slate of übercool acts like grunge gods Mudhoney (sporting their Hard-On for War), the hyper Yeah Yeahs Yeahs (who yelp and buzz through their Shot Down), Philly’s dark-hearted Burning Brides (with the brooding bruiser Overhead Metal Erection) and L.A. pop-rock kings Weezer (who offer the unreleased You Won’t Get With Me Tonight). But they don’t come cooler than Iggy Pop, who hosts the disc and offers the hilarious New York City is Beating Its Chest … Again, with the unforgettable refrain: “I’m sick of Moby!” I guarantee you won’t feel that way about this disc.
