Legendary Parisian disco pioneer and producer Black Devil Disco Club has just announced the release of his new album Etincelles — and previewed it with the single La Mer Sur L’Enfer, showcasing today on Tinnitist.
Due on independent U.K. imprint Lo Recordings on Dec. 1, Etincelles — which translates as ‘sparks’ in English — is the followup to 2020’s Lucifer Is A Flower. “I wrote these six new pieces with simple French words that a student learning French can understand,” says Bernard Fevre. “It is always intended for fanciful dances and musical fantasies.”
Etincelles will be digitally available in December, then released on limited-edition coloured vinyl wrapped in screen-printed sleeves with lazer-cut triangles designed by the award-winning Non Format team next year. A truly future-perfect and infectious collection of electronic sounds and beats, the album features six new tracks including La Mer Sur L’ Enfer, which was inspired by Salvador Dali.
With a story as deep and strange as the music itself, Black Devil’s Fevre is a French composer of electronic library music with a highly sought after back catalogue that includes the magnificent Strange World Of Bernard Fevre.
Having grown up and worked in Paris, it was the underground clubs and diverse rhythms in the city that inspired him to make his celebrated debut album Black Devil Disco Club with only a small arsenal of electronic keyboards, a vocoder and looped conga drums. One of the most enigmatic electronic masterpieces ever made, the record was so ahead of its time it was not appreciated on first release and no one could believe it was from ’77 upon its re-release on the Rephlex label in 2004, with many people thinking it was a hoax and that the music was actually made by Aphex Twin or Luke Vibert. It wasn’t until Lo Recordings put out the 28 After album in 2006 that the truth was finally revealed.
