Classic DVD Review: Steve Earle & The Dukes | Transcendental Blues Live

The hardcore troubadour performs the title album (and little else) for Toronto fans.

This came out in 2003 – or at least that’s when I got it. Here’s what I said about it back then (with some minor editing):

If you’ve never seen roots-rock hero Steve Earle live, you don’t know what you’re missing. But here’s your chance to find out.

Transcendental Blues Live captures a typically passionate Earle concert filmed in Toronto a couple of years ago during his (duh) Transcendental Blues tour. Actually, that title says more than you think — a sharply focused Earle plays virtually the entire album and almost nothing else during this hour-long set, which could spoil the fun for fans of his older material. Naturally, though, he finds the time to toss in a version of his biggest hit Copperhead Road. After all, there are some tunes nobody can transcend. Not even Earle.

NOTE: The live DVD isn’t online anywhere, so I included the studio album below.
