Classic Album Review: Mclusky | My Pain And Sadness Is More Sad And Painful Than Yours

The Welsh post-grunge trio's debut proves they already had their game plan in place.

This came out in 2003 – or at least that’s when I got it. Here’s what I said about it back then (with some minor editing):

Noisy Welsh post-grunge trio Mclusky earned the dubious distinction of placing 47th on my Top 75 Albums of 2002, thanks to their nasty, gnarly little gem Mclusky Do Dallas. Now, mere months later, here’s another CD from the absurdists. But no, the boys didn’t work that fast.

The smirk-inducing My Pain And Sadness Is More Sad And Painful Than Yours is their first album, released overseas in 2000 but just now getting the domestic treatment. Not surprisingly, it’s a bit of a step back from Dallas. The songs are a bit rawer, the beats a bit clunkier, the guitars a bit fuzzier, the vocals a bit yelpier, the whole package a bit less consistent. Still, these 15 fiercely catchy cuts — which come with screwball titles like Friends Stoning Friends and Rice Is Nice, along with enigmatic lyrics like “Goddamn it / everyone’s a hero” — show the lads had their game plan in place back then. It just took them a while to execute it. Here’s hoping it doesn’t take them long to follow it up.
