Classic Album Review: Mississippi John Hurt | Frankie & Albert

This live set captures the bluesman at the peak of his powers, a year before his death.

This came out in 2003 – or at least that’s when I got it. Here’s what I said about it back then (with some minor editing):

Folk-blues singer-guitarist Mississippi John Hurt put out records back in the ’20s — but it wasn’t until the ’60s that he was rediscovered and thrust into the big time.

This live set — which seems to be a 1965 concert that’s already been issued under several titles — captures him at the height of his powers, one year before his death.

ON THE MENU: Hurt covers everything from Hot Time In The Old Town Tonight to Nobody’s Business if I Do, but his dextrous finger-picking, darkly warm vocals and easygoing back-porch vibe are the real attractions on this 21-song set.

SURPRISE: Hurt’s sunny disposition makes even ribald numbers like Shake That Thing and Salty Dog seem fit for a church picnic.
