Classic Album Review: Tony Bennett & k.d. lang | A Wonderful World

The odd couple share the mic on jazz classics from the one & only Louis Armstrong.

This came out in 2002 – or at least that’s when I got it. Here’s what I said about it back then (with some minor editing):

Looks like jazz uber-crooner Tony Bennett and pop songstress k.d. lang hit it off when they dueted on Keep The Faith, Baby last year on his Playin’ With My Friends album.

Here, they kick their musical relationship up a notch, sharing the microphone on a dozen jazz classics from the repertoire of the one and only Louis Armstrong. And with the backing of a tight little lounge combo (and the occasional string section), the extremely odd couple don’t do too shabby a job. Bennett’s velvety, less-is-more style dovetails quite nicely with lang’s too-good-for-pop pipes on a slate of Satchmo chestnuts that includes I’m Confessin’ (That I Love You), Exactly Like You and, natch, the ever-optimistic title track. If they keep this up, they could end up the Steve and Eydie of the MTV generation.
