Classic Album Review: Tracy Chapman | Let it Rain

An all-star backing band brings grit and funk to the troubadour's sombre tunes.

This came out in 2002 – or at least that’s when I got it. Here’s what I said about it back then (with some minor editing):

For a woman who is arguably best known for a song called Fast Car, Tracy Chapman sure does sound like she’s trapped on a slow boat much of the time.

Let It Rain, her sixth album, has plenty of the sweetly melodic but sombrely emotive acoustic balladry you have come to expect from the sensitive singer-songwriter. Thankfully, the backing players — made up of sidemen for P.J. Harvey, Beck and Tom Waits — bring some jazzbo grit and earthy funk to the proceedings.
