Teni Rane | Meet Me In Stockholm: Exclusive Premiere

The East Tennessee singer-songwriter sends a lonely letter in her sweet new single.

Teni Rane longs for her long-distance lover in her invitingly melancholy new single Meet Me In Stockholm — premiering exclusively on Tinnitist.

Recorded on the Swedish island of Gotland in the Baltic Sea during a recent sojourn abroad, the sweetly heartfelt folk-pop gem about love and loneliness in a foreign land is the first of four new singles the East Tennessee singer-songwriter will be releasing in the next eight weeks.

“For me, there is always a duality: That feeling of mourning and melancholy even in the most beautiful places and during the most unique experiences,” Rane explains. “Especially when I am alone in that experience or place. I have a deep desire to share experiences with others and sometimes struggle to rest in an experience that I am having by myself.

“When I found myself living abroad in Sweden for five months — away from family and from my future spouse — I felt pulled so much towards a feeling of loneliness in each amazing sunset, each incredible blue sky summer day, each tantalizing whiff of apples in the autumn air. It took me a long time to learn that I could hold that loneliness and the aloneness together in the same body at the same time. And that aloneness has so much space and joy and openness itself.

“Time and distance play a key role in this bilingual invitation to a steady friend and lover to Meet Me In Stockholm. This song was born to ease the emotion of being in a place and opportunity that was incredible and special and once in a lifetime, and still wishing for my best friend to be there beside me sharing it all. When recording Meet Me In Stockholm, I leaned into the melancholy melody lines of the song. The long sustaining cries of steel and electric in the background complement a melodic bass that reflects the marching forward of time through whichever emotion is present in the moment.”

Rane grew up in and around a community of musicians who helped nurture in her an early love for music. Her vocals carry power and finesse rolled together with perfect balance to evoke the emotional feel of her lyrics, and her Americana-take on select covers is delightfully unexpected and well-received by a wide demographic. Through each stage of her writing life, her original songs have revealed a level of maturity that allows her to weave common experiences into songs that captivate people in every age range.

As a child she was often found belting out lyrics in the back seat on the way to just about anywhere. That six-CD changer exposed her to the writing of Nanci Griffith, Carole King, Beth Woods, John Prine, Eagles, Fleetwood Mac and many other greats. The resulting flavor of her original work is an eclectic mix influenced by the earliest writing she encountered, as well as by contemporary pop music.

In 2020 Teni released her first EP Heart in Tennessee. In the summer of 2022 she took up a musical residency at Kneippbyn Resort Visby on Gotland. Connecting with many talented musicians on the island, she created the space to work with Sandkvie Studios to record four singles (Meet Me in Stockholm, Cozy Inside, Rosemary & Evergreen, Tennessee Snow) that will be released in the fall of 2022.

Teni thrives in the listening room setting, where she feels the most connected to the audience through the conversation and story lines of her music. In 2022 she had the opportunity to participate as an artist in Bristol Rhythm and Roots Reunion. When playing live, she is often accompanied by her partner and spouse Jonathan Shumaker on the bass. Here are her upcoming dates:

Nov 04 – Bristol, VA – Radio Bristol (WBCM)
Nov 25 – Chattanooga, TN – Redbud
Nov 26 – Knoxville, TN – WDVX Blue Plate Special
Nov 29 – Asheville, NC – Funkatorium, Wicked Weed Brewing
Dec 09 – Abingdon, VA – Tumbling Creek Cider Company
