Classic Album Review: Sixty Stories | Anthem Red

The Winnipeg trio’s debut deftly navigates between pop, punk, rock & emo.

This came out in 2002 – or at least that’s when I got it. Here’s what I said about it back then (with some minor editing):

FILE UNDER: Women who rock — and the guy who plays drums behind them.

SOUNDS SORTA LIKE: Juliana Hatfield, if she sang two octaves lower and still suffered from post-adolescent angst.

POINTED COMMENTS: Fronted by the husky, tomboyish vocals of guitarist Jo Snyder, anchored by the grinding basslines of Sarah Sangster and the crisp drumming of Paul Furgate, Sixty Stories’ spunky tunes deftly navigate the connections between pop, punk, rock and emo on this impressive debut full-length. Even better, they do it with plenty of strong melodies and intelligent, thought-provoking lyrics about adolescent-themed topics like anorexia (Less of Me), alienation (Constellations) and McJobs (Quit My Job). But if you see this CD, buy it. End of story.
