Albums Of The Week: Tom Morello | The Atlas Underground Flood

Innovation and collaboration genre and consistency as the driving force behind the maverick guitar hero's freewheeling, star-studded sequel to his latest studio album.

THE EDITED PRESS RELEASE: “Following the October release of his critically acclaimed album The Atlas Underground Fire, rock ’n’ roll icon and two-time Grammy winner Tom Morello has dropped the sister album The Atlas Underground Flood.

Although the announcement of the album came as a surprise, Morello has spoken at length in interviews that the collaborative process he embraced for Fire generated a wealth of songs, so a second album perhaps seemed inevitable. Featuring a slew of all-stars including Nathaniel Rateliff, Jim James, Idles, Ben Harper, Alex Lifeson, Kirk Hammett, X Ambassadors, Barnes Courtney, Manchester Orchestra, Andrew McMahon in the Wilderness and more, Morello will continue to showcase his signature extraordinary guitar-playing across these 12 new genre-bending tracks.”

The Atlas Underground Flood finishes what The Atlas Underground Fire started,” Morello says. “With Fire & Flood, I was inspired by The Clash’s London Calling. I sought to make a double album where artistic intent supersedes genre. I aimed to forge a central curated vision to tie together a sonically fearless, wild, and wide-ranging musical ambition with a tremendous cast of collaborators. And of course, there are many guitar solos.”
