Late-Night TV Music (Fuggedaboudit Edition) | Feb. 13, 2019

Avril Lavigne, Betty Who, Josh Groban and Mt. Joy bring no joy to the tube.

A little joy, a little sorrow, a dash of dance music, plenty of ballads — and nothing worth remembering. Wednesday’s late-night talk show musical segments seemed like a mixed bag — but unfortunately, it all turned out to be little more than empty air and filler. You had returning pop-rock queen Avril Lavigne channeling her latest personal travails into her insipid new ballad Head Above Water on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon. You had the appropriately named Betty Who kicking up her heels on the forgettably poppy I Remember (Lyric of the Night: “I don’t want perfect, I want you”) on The Late Late Show With James Corden. You had Josh Groban crooning River from his long-gone 2018 album Bridges for Jimmy Kimmel Live. And finally you had L.A.-via-Philly folk-rockers Mt. Joy proffering another twofer of tunes — this time it was Julia and Astrovan — on Last Call With Carson Daly. Here’s hoping somebody does something more memorable for Valentine’s Day.
