This came out in 2005 — or at least that’s when I got it. Here’s what I said about it back then (with some minor editing):
No, it’s not a retrospective. Well, at least not of their own music.
The title of U.K. electronica duo Lemon Jelly’s third full-length ’64-’95 refers to the age of the samples contained therein. For instance: The song ’88 AKA Come Down On Me is based around licks nicked from a 1988 song by guitar rockers Masters of Reality, while ’75 AKA The Slow Train borrows from a mid-’70s track by popsters Gallagher and Lyle. Obviously, the range of years makes for a fairly varied set, with everything from folk and jazz to punk and William Shatner in the groovy mix. Whether you see that as eclectic or unfocused depends on your view, but either way you’ve gotta give LJ credit not only for finding a novel concept but for pulling it off stylishly and successfully. Call it the electronica disc of the years.
