Classic Album Review: Louis XIV | Illegal Tender

This came out in 2005 — or at least that’s when I got it. Here’s what I said about it back then (with some minor editing):

Despite their regal name, California trio Louis XIV are less suited to a palace than the garage. Or perhaps the gutter, judging from this debut five-track EP.

Laying down a thumpy backbeat and slashing away at their guitars, these randy San Diegans leer, smirk and sneer through Brit-influenced, glam-flecked odes to sleazy livin’ and easy women. If The White Stripes tried to sound like Ziggy-era David Bowie covering Dirty Deeds Done Dirt Cheap, this is how it would come off. Look for their full-length Best Little Secrets Are Kept nexts month. But look for this first. Louis XIV rules.
