Classic Album Review: Charlie Hunter & Bobby Previte | Come in Red Dog, This is Tango Leader

The jazz guitar-slinger & the kinetic drummer are a duo that do as much as a band.

This came out in 2004 – or at least that’s when I got it. Here’s what I said about it back then (with some minor editing):

With his ambidextrous virtuosity and seven-string axe, jazz-guitar god Charlie Hunter is practically an entire band. Combine that with drummer Bobby Previte and his furiously kinetic syncopation, and you’ve got a duo that can do the work of a sextet.

And with their CD Come In Red Dog, This Is Tango Leader, you’ve got an acid-jazz set that packs some serious bounce to the ounce. As Hunter simultaneously plucks groovy basslines, jazzy chord sequences and smoking solos, Previte keeps the backbeat pumping and thumping, adding synthesized samples to the sonic stewpot. Listening to these two manic multi-taskers pool their talents, you wonder why other bands need so many members.
