Vanarin fantasize about being A Fly On The Wall in their unpredictable and inventive new single — showcasing today on Tinnitist.
The first preview of the Italian-English band’s upcoming third album, A Fly On The Wall nimbly flits and buzzes between genres, blending danceable indie-pop and psychedelia with a light dusting of electronic noise and distortion to illustrate lyrics that dream about throwing in the towel, sitting back and watching the world go up in flames:
“An animal, I could be hangin’ from a tree
You’re watchin’ on your TV
Made a hole, so to see crawlin’ underneath
Don’t want to get too deep
Change of pace break the mood
Orange haired baboon speakin’ like a human
Throwin’ stones to break the bones
Flowin’ like a bee, stingin’ like a 4G
“Biting at the hand that feeds, you know they say you are what you eat?
The moon is going further out to sea but that info means nothing to me
I feel alright
Wouldn’t it be cool to do nothing at all?
A fly on the wall
Wouldn’t it be cool to watch it all come down?
Peeling off the wall.”
Always meticulous in their exploration of a multifaceted groove, the quartet reconfirm their catchy attitude here by transcending the canons of pop to contaminate themselves with rhythms from disco-funk to indietronica, all embellished with marked nu-soul influences given mainly by David Paysden’s vocals, which here are filtered, doubled and resampled through distorted and reverberated effects, becoming a true polymorphous instrument on a complex and captivating rhythmic and melodic score.
Prominent names that have made this crossover one of their prerogatives immediately come to mind, such as Hot Chip, Phoenix and, on the more psychedelic side, Tame Impala. The careful study of each musical element makes the track a very accomplished experiment of minimal-electro artistry, cleverly winking at the timeless “black” atmospheres, sublimated into lysergic and synthetic details without ever losing sight of the clubbing mood.
The result is a sparkling song that expresses the confidence in being idle, watching the world from the sidelines — an idea that fits well with summer, while demonstrating how a good dose of technique combined with talent and creativity beyond all limits is capable of generating kaleidoscopic works such as this shimmering little gem with an irresistibly infectious vitality.
An Anglo-Italian psych-pop band formed in July 2016, by Paysden, Marco Sciacqua, Massimo Mantovani and Marco Brena, Vanarin have a sound best described as a combination of psych-pop and rock. They have two successful albums to their credit so far — Overnight (2018) and Treading Water (2022) — along with two EPs. They have played more than 150 gigs, participating in big festivals like in Europe and Asia, and opened for acts such as Battles, Thurston Moore, Public Image Ltd., Yellow Straps, The Rodeo, Silica Gel and HYBS.
