Compass + Cavern experience an evolutionary wake-up call in their new single and live video I Discovered The Future — showcasing today on Tinnitist.
A preview of the independent Denver alt-rock band’s upcoming album Shift, I Discovered The Future finds singer-guitarist Will Timbers imagining how it would feel to go from mindless ape to self-aware human being. A rousing blend of heaviness and hooks, with more smarts and savvy than your typical pop-rock chart fluff, the track is about suddenly realizing the weight of the world, the brand-new landscape of morality, and, as the name suggests, the existence of the future. The song is accompanied by a video capturing the band’s first live performance of the song in their home town.
Compass + Cavern is the result of the long-time friendship between Timbers and Chris Fruci. They have been writing and performing music together for over a decade, ever since meeting in Nashville as freshmen at Vanderbilt University. C+C is their current musical outlet for sharing deep thoughts, reflections, wild dreams, frustrations, strange stories and more.
The band’s sound is characterized by massive synths, riffing guitars, dynamic drums, vocal harmonies, and the occasional (but always appropriate) shaker. How do only two people (plus a drummer) pull this off? Surely with pre-recorded tracks, a backup choir, artificial intelligence, etc. Nope. It all happens live. The magic is real, and so is the friendship you see on stage. Ditto the behind-the-scenes dedication you don’t.
“We’ve quit great jobs, run our SUVs into the ground, slept terribly in countless unfamiliar places, invested thousands of dollars, invested thousands of hours — all in service of Compass + Cavern,” admits Fruci. “Since forming the band in 2015, we’ve explored many ways to build a passionate fanbase, both locally and globally, as an independent band.
“We’re both in our 30s now and starting families. We know the odds are against us, but we also know it’s easier today than ever before to ‘make it’ as middle-class musicians who serve a loyal and devoted fanbase. We’re on a mission to figure out how to break through and realize our long-time dream.”
To that end, after years of releasing singles and EPs, Compass + Cavern are going all-in on their first full-length release in seven years. The new album (due in early January 2025) represents an evolution for the band — one that showcases their growth musically and personally. Timbers and Fruci are excited about this next phase and how it pushes their accessible, yet musically challenging brand of alternative rock further.
