Matthew Alexander Gladly Goes Overboard

The U.K. singer-songwriter updates timless R&B with a contemporary approach.

Matthew Alexander jumps in with both feet on his new single Overboard — showcasing today on Tinnitist.

The talented London singer-songwriter and producer’s new track is the latest highlight from his recent EP Meraki. Following the success of his debut single Aligned, the former Brit School student (who is from a family of musicians and songwriters) returns with a fresh perspective, blending the timeless allure of R&B and soul with a contemporary sound that resonates with audiences across generations.

Formerly known as Mista, Matthew Alexander has been on a journey of self-discovery, stripping back to his birth name to reconnect with his roots and musical essence. With Meraki, released under his independent label, the artist showcases his deep-seated connection with R&B and soul, infusing it with modern elements that captivate listeners from start to finish.

The new single from the EP, Overboard exudes a nostalgic charm, enveloping listeners in its sumptuous blend of R&B-infused pop. Matthew’s soulful vocals, reminiscent of classic R&B legends, intertwine seamlessly with intricate melodies, crafted with acoustic and electric guitar elements, all produced entirely by Matthew in his home studio.

Describing the inspiration behind Overboard, Matthew shares, “It’s a conceptual celebratory song about alcohol consumption with an underlying melancholy nod towards alcohol abuse and lack of love. This song means a lot to me, as all of the songs I write do.”

Overboard transports listeners to the golden era of R&B, echoing the pop-infused gems of the ’80s and ’90s, while also carving out a unique space in today’s music landscape. With influences spanning from R&B icons such as Craig David, Brandy and Music Soulchild, Alexander infuses each note of Overboard with soulful depth and infectious hooks, ensuring its place on repeat in the hearts of listeners.

Meraki marks the beginning of an exciting new chapter for Alexander, cementing his place as an artist to watch out for in 2024. With his debut EP, he invites audiences to embark on a soulful journey, guided by his rich storytelling and clean, captivating vocals.
