Classic Album Review: Voodoo Child | Baby Monkey

Break’s over, Moby — quit dicking around and get back to work.

This came out in 2004 – or at least that’s when I got it. Here’s what I said about it back then (with some minor editing):

If you pay attention to the techno scene, you probably already know Voodoo Child is an alter-ego of Moby.

And if you pay attention to the liner notes of his new album Baby Monkey, you probably already know that Moby decided to make this “simple, straightforward dance record” to take a break from his more experimental, avant-garde work — and he wanted to issue it pseudonymously so he wouldn’t have to face so much media scrutiny over it. Well, OK. But here’s the thing: If you want monotonously thumping beats, repetitive synthesizer lines and fake handclaps, you can listen to an old Orbital album. Or any other old techno disc from 1992. You don’t need to shell out for this bit of fluff. Which is another way of saying: Break’s over, Moby — quit dicking around and get back to work.
