Cookie Delicious & Natalie Bohrn Freak Out Over A Broken Connection

The multi-talented Winnipegger turns angst & heartache into dancefloor genius.

Cookie Delicious yearns to bridge a Broken Connection with the help of Slow Spirit’s Natalie Bohrn in his new single and video — showcasing today on Tinnitist.

A snappy sneak preview of the Winnipeg multi-instrumentalist, composer, producer and DJ’s upcoming (and tellingly titled) album Collaborations, Broken Connection is the coolest (and funkiest) breakup song you’ll hear this week. Melding an understated low-riding groove with an intricate collage of candy-coated synths, minimalist metaphorical lyrics, finger-licking guitars and Bohrn’s sweetly soaring and swooping vocals, the track confidently transforms romantic heartache and/or existential angst into an irresistible invitation to rattle your bones, wave your freak flag and dance the night away with Mr. D.

“I consider Broken Connection an absolute quirky ass little banger of a chune with sadness-infused lyrics and a vocal delivery of the finest fine quality,” hypes Cookie D, the alter ego of prolific scenester Joel Klaverkamp. “The bassline dances around a brick wall of a beat with poly-rhythmic percussion weaving through the difference like a laser. The synth slides up and down your spine and there is a very cute casio solo in there too. The whole jam is topped off with some tasty guitar, used sparingly so as not to overpower the beat.”

Broken Connection is the first single from Collaborations, due March 1. The album is Cookie’s second full-length release, and its seven songs showcase Klaverkamp doing what he does best — collaborating with pals. The sound is a mesmerizing, flowing river of groove where the catchiness is legit scary. Every jam is jelly tight, with an energy that’s nothing short of spellbinding.

This album was born out of Song Every Week workshops hosted by Bohrn. For this project, the music was completed fully and then handed off to specially selected friends in the Winnipeg music scene who wrote the lyrics and recorded their vocals. As befits his magnetic status, the Cookster amassed an impressive roster of guest vocalists — along with the dynamic Bohrn, VIPs behind his velvet rope include the magical Domo Lemoine of À La Mode, the masterful Greg MacPherson, the iconic Renée Vandale of Robojom and the soul-stirring Courtney Fox.
