Classic DVD Review: Jonathan Richman | Take Me To The Plaza

The eccentric troubadour holds you in the palm of his hand with his latest live set.

This came out in 2003 – or at least that’s when I got it. Here’s what I said about it back then (with some minor editing):

Backing band? Eccentric troubadour and cult hero Jonathan Richman don’t need no stinkin’ backing band! Here, all the former Modern Lovers leader and proto-punk singer-songwriter needs is standup drummer Tommy Larkins and 19 of his belovedly quirky tunes — including I Was Dancin’ In The Lesbian Bar, You Can’t Talk To The Dude and the unforgettable Pablo Picasso — to hold a San Francisco audience (and you) in the palm of his hand for an hour and change.
