Classic Album Review: Snakes And Music | Truisms

This New Jersey indie outfit’s debut split the difference between a host of influences.

This came out in 2003 – or at least that’s when I got it. Here’s what I said about it back then (with some minor editing):

Snakes And Music? What the hell is that supposed to mean? A cross between Snakes And Ladders and Words And Music?

Actually, that might be sort of appropriate — after all, this New Jersey indie outfit’s music certainly splits the difference between a host of influences. Between the hack ’n’ slash guitar lines, downcast vocals, ragged harmonies, noise-punk flourishes, repetitive arrangements and sincere melodies, you can hear traces of everything from garage to emo and echoes of everyone from Sonic Youth to Superchunk in the nine dark hypnotic spells found on their potent and engaging debut disc Truisms. A few more big choruses and some slightly groovier beats and these guys could be bigger than … well, a band named Ladders And Words.
