Classic Album Review: Pearl Jam | Lost Dogs

Eddie Vedder and co. unleash a pack of 30 superb outtakes from their career.

This came out in 2003 – or at least that’s when I got it. Here’s what I said about it back then (with some minor editing):

You can already purchase every recent Pearl Jam live show on CD. So why not every studio track too?

Lost Dogs, the new two-CD rarities collection from Seattle’s last surviving (and most deserving) grunge band, is a step in the right direction. It collects 30 non-album tracks — demos, B-sides, compilation cuts and assorted leftovers — from throughout the band’s 12-year recording career. Many if not most of which, quite frankly, are every bit as well-crafted and passionately performed as anything Eddie Vedder and co. have released on their seven studio albums. The obvious lure is their cover of Last Kiss, which unexpectedly became their biggest single a few years back. But the real catches here are unearthed treasures like the galloping All Night, the Zeppish In The Moonlight, the raucous cover of Leavin’ Here and the concert staple Yellow Ledbetter. Plus, that fish-eye shot of their tape vault in the packaging makes it pretty obvious they have enough stuff left over for Volume 2.
