Classic Album Review: Joss Stone | The Soul Sessions

The teenage British singer joins the diva sisterhood with her stunning debut album.

This came out in 2003 – or at least that’s when I got it. Here’s what I said about it back then (with some minor editing):

URGENT MESSAGE FROM: The Diva Sisterhood.
TO: Amanda Marshall.

Dear Amanda: Speaking on behalf of divas and their fans the world over, we wish to take this opportunity to thank you for your years of faithful service. However, now that British teen-soul phenom Joss Stone has joined the sorority, we regret to inform you that your presence is no longer required. Please do not take this personally. You are not the only one affected. The truth is, despite being just 16, the young Ms. Stone and her heartbreaking, honey-dripping pipes will be taking over for you, Nikka Costa, Anastacia and several other mid-level vocalists all receiving this notice today. Plus her inspired song selection — this 10-song debut disc includes smouldering covers of everything from Harlan Howard’s The Chokin’ Kind to John Ellison’s Some Kind of Wonderful to a gender-flipped version of The White StripesFell In Love With A Girl — will appeal to a broader audience than most of the names above combined. In conclusion, thank you once again and best of luck in the future. Please clean out your dressing room and turn in your key to the diva lounge by Friday.
