Classic Album Review: Johnny Cash | A Concert: Behind Prison Walls

The Man in Black's latest jailhouse recordings don't equal his previous outings.

This came out in 2003 – or at least that’s when I got it. Here’s what I said about it back then (with some minor editing):

With Johnny Cash’s recent passing, you might be tempted by this just-released live recording. But buyer beware — A Concert: Behind Prison Walls is indeed a rare Cash recording, but not necessarily an essential one.

Basically the audio feed of a mid-’70s TV special, A Concert has just seven tunes by Cash, bookended around performances by Roy Clark and Chet Atkins, Linda Ronstadt and standup drunkard Foster Brooks. Sure, the Cash tunes — which include Folsom Prison Blues, Sunday Morning Coming Down, Hey Poerter and A Boy Named Sue — are decent enough. But the thin sound and utter lack of credits make A Concert seem as generic as its title. Save your money for his San Quentin and Folsom Prison albums; those are the only concerts from behind prison walls a fan really needs to own.
