Classic Album Review: Los Straitjackets | Supersonic Guitars in 3-D

Nashville's wrestling-masked surf-rock instrumentalists keep riding their own wave.

This came out in 2003 – or at least that’s when I got it. Here’s what I said about it back then (with some minor editing):

Sure, instrumental surf-guitar bands aren’t exactly hard to find.

But how many do you know that wear Mexican wrestling masks? And whose albums includes guest spots by the likes of blues-punk Jon Spencer, alt-rocker Don Fleming and members of L.A. punk icons X? And who don’t stop at calling their album Supersonic Guitars in 3-D, but include real 3-D glasses so you can get an eyeful of all the eyepopping cover art? It’s that sort of hipness — not to mention their firecracker blend of twangy Duane Eddy licks, turbocharged Dick Dale solos and pounding Surfaris beats — that keeps Nashville wildcats Los Straitjackets riding the top of the surf wave. Granted, if you’ve got one Straitjackets album, you’ve kinda got ’em all. But if you don’t have one yet, here’s the place to start.
