Classic Album Review: Leslie Alexander | Savage Country

The Canadian singer's sophomore release grabs your attention in a big way.

This came out in 2003 – or at least that’s when I got it. Here’s what I said about it back then (with some minor editing):

In music, as in life, it’s the little things that matter.

Vancouver-based, Alberta-raised roots singer-songwriter Leslie Alexander seems to understand this — her impressive sophomore album Savage Country is full of little things that grab your attention in a big way. Like the way her lyrics are full of rich, realistic details of rural life, love and hardship. Or the way she sets those lyrics against a prairie backdrop of pretty, melancholy melodies that combine country, folk, bluegrass and Celtic influences. Or the way she can remind you of Rosanne Cash one minute, Emmylou Harris the next and Bonnie Raitt a minute after that. Put all those little things together and they add up to an artist with sizable potential.
