Albums Of The Week: Vintage Trouble | Heavy Hymnal

THE EDITED PRESS RELEASE: “The hardest-working band in rock — Hollywood blues-funk rockers Vintage Trouble — are back in business with their new third album Heavy Hymnal.

History has proven that when the world is in flames, it ignites the empathetic artists to siren their words, music, and rhythm, to blanket society’s fury and nurse scorched souls. The seemingly endless years of pandemic lockdown and social distancing, coupled with the turbulent plague of civil unrest and racial injustice, called on Vintage Trouble to step into their battle wear.

Like so often before, they have spun records to drop onto the fighting grounds, with the intent to freeze the frame long enough to momentarily halt the warring world. And while at ease, we can freely choose to think before we strike or decide to retreat, rather than thoughtlessly charge into repeating history. This collection of heavy hymns is from the heart, and it provides a necessary rise to our ever reckoning.

Vintage Trouble comprises lead singer Ty Taylor, guitarist Nalle Colt, bassist Rick Barrio Dill and drummer Richard Danielson. Taking the best parts of James Brown, Mick Jagger, Bruno Mars and Prince, vocalist Ty is widely regarded as one of the finest frontmen of his generation.

The first track from the album is Not The One. “This tune is about someone being in a relationship that has them feeling taken advantage of, manipulated, and belittled,” Taylor says. “When one loves hard, one gives in and compromises deeply to a fault. But there is a power that comes along with self-awareness and the realization that you have taken all that you can take. Enough is enough. No one will respect you more than you respect yourself. The change starts with you. With me in this case.

“The hardest part about singing and playing this song is the harsh understanding of how far away from my fire I was allowing myself to be, in order to satisfy someone else’s happiness. I remember when I was a kid, hearing grown folks around me that had no intention of dealing with the bullshit that was being thrown at them anymore saying, ‘I’m not the one.’ It always sounded so strong and liberating to me. We thought to allow the chorus and chords of the song to reside in the late 1950s but have the groove and verse melody swing like modern-day hips.”

Vintage Trouble formed in Hollywood in 2010 and were ushered almost immediately to the world’s stages by legendary music manager Doc McGhee. Their acclaimed performance on Later with Jools Holland catapulted their debut album The Bomb Shelter Sessions to the top of Amazon’s U.K. charts. From there, the band launched into non-stop touring with acts like The Rolling Stones, AC/DC, The Who, Bon Jovi, Dave Matthews, Brian May, Gov’t Mule, Paloma Faith and Lenny Kravitz, to name a few.

Vintage Trouble have main-staged Coachella, Glastonbury, Lollapalooza, Rock in Rio, Byron Bay Blues Festival, Bonnaroo, Life is Beautiful and most other major festivals. They’ve appeared the biggest TV shows, including David Letterman, Conan O’Brien, Craig Ferguson, Jimmy Kimmel, and a record four times in one year on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno.”
