Classic Album Review: Mano Negra | Best Of

Manu Chao's French gypsy-punks compile two dozen tracks from their seven LPs.

This came out in 1999 – or at least that’s when I got it. Here’s what I said about it back then (with some minor editing):

Named after an anarchist group, these French gypsy-punks led by singer-guitarist Manu Chao took a similar anything-goes approach to their music.

Red-hot Parisian jazz, rock en Español, flamenco, rap, rockabilly, reggae and ska, funk, salsa, surf and even waltzes all get tossed into the grab-bag here — and they all get played with the idealistic fervor of The Clash. And even though it’s been four years since Mano Negra broke up, these two dozen tracks from their seven albums fit right in with today’s cut-and-paste global rock.
