Albums Of The Week: Moby | Resound NYC

The shape-shifting artist pays tribute to his hometown — with the help of an all-star cast of guest vocalists (including Margo Timmins) — on his second orchestral album.

THE EDITED PRESS RELEASE: “I gave myself the broad but specific criteria that the music had to have either been written or recorded in New York,” says Moby about Resound NYC, his second dive into the orchestral world following 2021’s Reprise.

By reimagining hits first heard between 1994 and 2010, he reflects not only an era in his life, but also his birthplace, one of the world’s most iconic cities. Beneath the noirish cover shot of Moby backed by the Empire State Building, the album features legendary tracks such as In My Heart, South Side, Perfect Life, Slipping Away and more. When It’s Cold I’d Like to Die. From the sublime desperation of “When It’s Cold I’d Like to Die” to the manic stomp of Extreme Ways (best known as the theme from the Jason Bourne film franchise), the reworked tracks burst forth with boundless energy.

Resound NYC has its own instrumental formation, with analogue synths and Mellotron used alongside more traditional strings and prominent brass. Joining Moby on the album are a chamber ensemble and a lineup of guest artists as eclectic as it is stellar — including Nicole Scherzinger, Gregory Porter, Ricky Wilson of Kaiser Chiefs, Mylsene Farmer, Margo Timmins of Cowboy Junkies, Lady Blackbird, Dougy Mandagi (of The Temper Trap) and Amythyst Kiah.”
