Sam Corbett is living proof that what doesn’t kill you makes you stronger.
Just five years ago, the Sheepdogs drummer was diagnosed with cancer at age 34, while his wife was pregnant with their first child. Rather than wallow in misery and worry, he channelled his energy into creating his own music — and emerged with his debut solo album as Nutana, named for his old Saskatoon neighbourhood. While the LP deals openly and honestly with his health crisis, it’s neither dark nor depressing, opting instead for bright, warm, vintage-sounding pop-rock and indie-folk, peppered with a bit of his band’s shaggy Can-rock. A few weeks before Nutana’s release, Corbett Zoomed in from home to discuss his recovery, loving Leon Russell, Juno streakers and plenty more. Enjoy.
