Albums Of The Week: The Lancasters | Standard Family Size

The Italian battalion follow in the footsteps of ’60s & ’70s legends on the second LP.

THE TRANSLATED & EDITED PRESS RELEASE:The Lancasters are a project created by singer-guitarist Davide Chiari, bassist Stefano Vanoni and drummer Federico Mariotto, inspired by the sacred origins of hard rock and psychedelic music from the late ’60s and early ’70s. During 2021, Andrea Cotelli joined the stable, adding his skill on guitar and vocals.

From Led Zeppelin to Jeff Beck, Rory Gallagher to Orang Uthan, The Kinks to Terry Reid and up to Black Sabbath — all these great names helped the three founding members shape the sound, approach and character of The Lancasters. For their expansive sophomore album Standard Family Size, Led Zeppelin, Jeff Beck Group, The Rolling Stones, MC5 and even Neil Young were added to that illustrious list.

And they aren’t the only names associated with the record. The 13 songs on the album feature a cast of characters and personalities — Liza, Isaiah, Little Suzie, the thief in The Runner, the seer in Odessa, the worker in Fired and so on. The concept brings all these figures together as part of a single family — despite the oddities attributable to each of their personalities, they are nevertheless united by a human bond, becoming 13 people who ironically form a standard family.

Like all their albums, Standard Family Size was was entirely produced and recorded with analog equipment— from the 16-track tape recorder to the vinyl press. They do it this way in order to find another way to follow in the sonic footsteps of the bands that inspired them.”
