Classic Album Review: Vav Jungle | Cream Corn Bath

Dig some groovy futuristic robo-porn soundtracks and space-age glitter-ball ditties.

This came out in 2003 – or at least that’s when I got it. Here’s what I said about it back then (with some minor editing):

Electro-pop queen Eve Rice is living in the wrong place. The wrong city, the wrong country — hell, the wrong hemisphere.

Which is not to say we don’t love her — and her sinfully groovy new disc Cream Corn Bath. After all, what is not to love about a woman who not only programs all her beatboxes, samples, sequencers and synths to churn out the funkiest go-go grooves and disco ditties this side My Life With the Thrill Kill Kult, but also knows how to fashion a hook sharp enough to land Moby Dick? But that’s the point — futuristic robo-porn soundtracks and space-age glitter-ball ditties like Burn Your Bra, Vav Say Hey and Friggin’ Hottie are just way too cool for these climes. If she took her white boots, deadpan diva vocals and beehive ’do to Japan, cut a couple of sides with Pizzicato 5, maybe did some vocals for Cornelius and got remixes by Fantastic Plastic Machine, she’d get the appreciation she deserves. Here’s she’s always gonna be the odd gal out. Oh well, at least technology is her friend.
