Albums Of The Week: Communism | Lovespeech

Can-Rock MVP Don Kerr might control the means of production in this project — but the goal is to unite us all on the dance floor with funky, impeccably crafted art-pop.

THE EDITED PRESS RELEASE:Communism are a brilliant musical project conceived by renowned Toronto producer and drummer Don Kerr (Bahamas, Dan Mangan, Ron Sexsmith, formerly Rheostatics, occasionally The Weather Station and Tanya Tagaq, among others). Communism are a dance party band with high ideals and high kicks, featuring original songs, much ’80s music, and classic dance-floor anthems by Donna Summer, Kate Bush, Talking Heads and Prince.

Lovespeech is Communism’s second album, following Get Down Get Together from 2016. The album starts with regret, then moves through yearning, empowerment, loss, psychedelia, chaos, and closes slowly floating into a mysterious future. Lovespeech is intended to inspire, excite, and unite people to celebrate and overcome our struggles the only way we can — together.

Communism formed in 2013. The current live lineup also serve as Dan Mangan’s backup band — guitarist Mike O’Brien and bassist Jason Haberman join Kerr and visual artist Craig Small in performance. Small designed the album artwork and is a band member, providing video and laser projections at live shows.

Lovespeech also features guitarist Kurt Swinghammer, bassist Kevin Lacroix, horn players Tom Richards, Paul Metcalfe, John Pittman and flautist Emily Steinwall.

Communism offer supercharged anthems of togetherness for dancing, singing, and staying connected in these strange times. They do their best to move you, inspire you, and open your heart.

“Wake up
Help people
Sing what you mean
Mean everything you sing
Your own story
With your own voice
Rock from your heart
The right song at the right time can change a mind, an election
Make or find reasons to dance beyond yourself
You may have 80 years but that is one small window
Communism is each of us offering our best to everyone
Fail and start again
Keep learning
To love
All of it.”
